The 6th Crypto Commons Gathering Returns to the Austrian Alps

Every August, something unusual happens in a small village at the foot of the Austrian Alps. Researchers, builders, activists, and practitioners gather at the Commons Hub — not for a crypto conference, but for something rarer: a week of genuine, unhurried inquiry into the commons, conducted as a commons.

The Crypto Commons Gathering is entering its sixth year, and if you haven't encountered it yet, here's what makes it different: there is no crypto shilling. No tokenized app launches. No panels assembled for optics. The schedule is co-created on arrival by the people in the room, unconference style. What fills the week are the conversations that actually matter — the ones that don't fit into a 20-minute conference slot or a Bluesky thread.

Over six days, participants move between workshops, deep research discussions, collaborative sessions, and the quiet work of simply living together. Past gatherings have explored:

But what distinguishes CCG from a reading group or an academic symposium is that the commoning isn’t just discussed — it’s practiced. Meals are prepared and shared together. Decisions are made collectively. The rhythms of the week emerge from the group, not from an agenda committee.

This is a space for people doing serious work on digital commons, distributed ledger technologies, and postcapitalist economics — and for anyone genuinely curious about what those words mean when they touch the ground.

💚 Nearly at Cost, by Design

The Crypto Commons Gathering is run nearly at cost. We’re not trying to turn a profit — we’re trying to sustain the infrastructure that makes this work possible. This event is put on by the Crypto Commons Association, a dynamic community of researchers, artists, and engineers working to forward the commons through new tooling for digital collaboration, and hosted at the incredible Commons Hub in the foothills of the Austrian alps.

Any proceeds go directly to:

• 🏠 Maintaining and improving the Commons Hub — the communal guesthouse and event venue in the Alps that serves as a year-round harbor for artists, hackers, dreamers, and tinkerers
• 🔬 Funding the research & working groups of the Crypto Commons Association — the organization behind the gathering, dedicated to advancing digital common goods, their academic analysis, and their broad social application.

🌿 There’s a New Energy Invigorating the Commons

Something has shifted. A new generation of commoner-regenerates is arriving, and their toolkits are evolving in thrilling ways. Self-hosted, local-first data architectures offering a clear path back to what the internet was always meant to be — distributed, sovereign, and community-enriching. The opportunities of real digital peer-for-peer collaboration are fertile and largely unexplored…until now.

There are also some exciting new foundations being laid for the p2p commons movement itself — but you’ll have to be in the room for those announcements. 😉
